Physical Education

Physical Education (PE) is the class in which kids learn to be active for a lifetime. In PE, students learn how to move their bodies fluently and develop the knowledge, fitness, physical skills and personal & social skills necessary for a lifetime of health and physical activity. We want our students to have the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to pursue whatever adventures they want in the future.

In grades Kindergarten to second, our focus is on fundamental foundational skills such as:
  • locomotor movement (jumping, galloping, leaping, & skipping)
  • non locomotor movements (balancing, stretching, & twisting)
  • manipulative skills (throwing, catching and kicking)
In third through fifth grades we build on the foundational skills with an emphasis on developing the mature forms of locomotor, non-locomotor and manipulative skills along with the application of combinations of movement forms into a variety of basic games and physical activity settings.

Hawaiian Studies

Gardening - Agriculture Studies

We integrate disciplines and support curriculum through living science labs in the outdoor classroom. Students learn, observe, predict, and collect data on natural life cycles. They learn and share cultural studies based on plant origins and adaptation processes to the islands. Students develop a strong connection to their food source through the experience of watching a plant grow, learning about the plant's life cycles, collecting data on growth and illustrating stages of its life cycle. Our students have an opportunity to develop a diverse food palate through place based education that supports grade level benchmarks.

Dash and Dot
Students in Kindergarten through 5th grade address computer science standards by working with a variety of tools to learn about programming and robotics.
  • Kindergarten - Scratch Jr., Dash and Dot robots with Go and Path, Kodable
  • First grade - Scratch Jr., Dash and Dot robots with Blockly, code.org
  • Second grade - Scratch Jr., Dash and Dot robots with Blockly, code.og
  • Third grade - Dash and Dot robots with Blockly, code.org
  • Fourth grade - Dash and Dot robots with Blockly, Wonder, code.org
  • Fifth grade - Dash and Dot robots with Blockly, Wonder, code.org
They practice pair programming using puzzles from code.org and work in pairs and trios to write programs for their Dash and Dot robots. Our students learn about algorithms, loops, nested loops, debugging, sequencing, and conditionals.

As a leadership school we use The 7 Habits as a common language to help students develop career and life skills.  Throughout the year each student will receive specific classes designed to provide instruction in areas such as: personal responsibility, planning / goal setting, prioritizing, collaboration, effective communication, public speaking and more.  It is our hope that these classes will prepare students to be positive contributing members of society.
